Question: I have an armoire in my living room, and I am debating about decorating the top of it. Everything I put on it looks cheesy. Do you have go-to accessories for this sort of thing?
Phoebe's Answer: This is a great question. The most important thing I want to say is do not put fake plants here (or on top of kitchen cabinets). They don't add anything except dust! Sometimes we decorate on top of an armoire, and sometimes not. But, when we do put something here, it is a select group of sturdy objects. For example, ceramics, porcelain or demijohns. Sometimes we hang artwork or mirrors above the armoire without anything else. And, we also leave this area blank quite often. All of this is to say, you do not necessarily have to do anything. It is another one of those "it depends" sort of things. And when in doubt, leave it blank. Below are some examples to better illustrate these ideas:
DECORATE WITH LARGE, SIMPLE ACCESSORIES
Large ceramic jars top this linen press in a bedroom.
Demijohns fill the large space on top of this armoire in a hallway.
Porcelain ginger jars sit atop this armoire in a bedroom.
Blue and white decorate the top of this highboy in a dining room.
HANG ART OR A MIRROR ABOVE
Two mirrors hang above this armoire in a living room.
Artwork wraps all around this secretary. No need for anything else on top!
LEAVE IT BLANK
Not only does this have a low ceiling, but the space just does not need anything else.
The artwork on either side of this armoire is enough here.
The decorative top of this armoire rules out the need for anything on top of it. Also, the ceiling is low here.
