Question: I like the layered rug look, but I don't really understand the rules. Can I put a sisal on top of a wool? What do you suggest?
Phoebe's Answer: We certainly layer rugs. Typically, we have a natural fiber like sisal as the base layer (either as an area rug or wall-to-wall) and then top it with an area rug. This is helpful when you have a small rug you would like to use, but it is not large enough to make sense in the space on its own. Also, we don't layer area rugs on top of wool or wall-to-wall carpeting (but natural fiber wall-to-wall is fine). You may find some photos of our work like this, but that was just styled for a photograph only. While we never say never, we have not put a sisal on top of something else.
