Question: Above my sofa is a massive wall. It feels overwhelming decorating it. I know one large piece of art would be great, but it feels cost prohibitive. What do you recommend?
Phoebe's Answer: As always, I start every plan for a room with a
floor plan. Determine the layout of the furniture, then determine what to hang
on the walls. Over the sofa in a living room is usually a very
important focal point in the room. I typically upholster sofas in solid
colors rather than prints, since prints can compete with art. A large
painting can be an investment, so consider a grouping of prints if your
budget does not allow for art. This can be very effective and
attractive. Also, photography can be less costly and fun to
