Question: We are remodeling a bathroom, and I don't know how high to hang the sconces on either side of the mirror. Can you share your recommendations for doing this?
Phoebe's Answer: Glad to help. Here are some guidelines that we follow when hanging bathroom sconces:
1. Typical sconce height above the finished floor is 64”. This won’t work for every situation, but this is a good height that we try to stick to on most jobs.
2. If you are doing one sconce above a bathroom vanity, the sconce will center above the mirror, which centers over the sink faucet and vanity. The height for an above-mirror sconce varies with the height of the room, mirror, etc. You want your sconce somewhat close to the top of your mirror, maybe 6” to 8” above it…You don’t want your mirror to be so far below your sconce that it looks like the mirror wasn’t designed to be there. Proportion is key in this situation.
3. For a vanity with two or three sconces on either side of your mirror(s), you want each sconce to be the same distance from the sides of the mirror(s) without going outside the width of your vanity.
4. If possible, it is best to pick your mirror before you place your sconces. That way, you can choose the perfect location for the sconces based on the dimensions of your mirror.
Take a look at some project elevations and then the finished photos. You can see every detail is planned out, down to the sconces:
